Cotton vs. Modal: Which One Does Your Skin Truly Prefer

  • For many of us, cotton has become the “gold standard.” It is a natural, reliable, and time-tested fiber that has been a staple in our wardrobes for decades. However, in the world of textiles, a new player has emerged that seriously challenges this classic — modal.

Does it outperform cotton in every way? Or is cotton still irreplaceable?

In this article, we will take a detailed look at their properties and help you decide whether modal truly deserves its “premium” status.

    What makes modal special?

Although both cotton and modal are plant-based fibers, their structure differs fundamentally. Modal is made from beech tree cellulose using advanced technology, which allows the creation of an exceptionally long, smooth, and uniform fiber.

In contrast, cotton fibers are shorter and have natural irregularities. This microscopic characteristic determines everything – from how a garment drapes to how it reacts to your body’s moisture.

    Detailed comparison: Modal vs. Cotton

To make it easier to understand and decide, let’s compare these two knitwear kings based on the most important everyday wear criteria:

    Feature

Cotton knit (Classic standard) Modal knit (Modern innovation)
Softness & feel Natural softness. Cotton fibers have microscopic “hairs” that give new garments a cozy feel. However, over time – especially due to hard water – they tend to stiffen, causing the fabric to lose its original softness. “Second-skin” effect. Modal has a completely smooth surface. It creates no friction against the skin and retains its silky glide even after many washes. An unbeatable choice for sensitive skin.
Moisture management Absorbs and holds. Cotton absorbs moisture very well but tends to retain it. When damp, cotton garments dry slowly, become heavier, and may cool the body. Absorbs and releases. Modal absorbs up to 50% more moisture than cotton and evaporates it faster. This allows the body to “breathe” and prevents the feeling of damp clothing, especially important at night or during activity.
Durability & appearance Natural wear. Over time, cotton fabric becomes rougher, and colors gradually fade (a greyish tone appears). This is a natural process, but it reveals the garment’s age more quickly. Pilling resistance. Due to its fiber structure, modal hardly pills (“bobbling”). It also retains dye exceptionally well, so even black or deep colors can look like new after a year.
Shape retention Prone to change. Cotton is less elastic. Depending on the weave, it may shrink after the first wash (up to 5%) or stretch out over time in certain areas (e.g., elbows or knees). Fiber memory. Modal is highly elastic and durable. It does not shrink or stretch out even after many washes, helping garments maintain their original shape and aesthetics.
Care specifics “Workhorse”. Cotton withstands higher temperatures, stronger spinning, and even tumble drying (although this shortens its lifespan). It is much easier to care for. Requires gentleness. Since modal is often blended with elastane, it should be washed in cool water (30°C) and kept away from tumble dryer heat to preserve fabric structure.
Price & value Accessible value. Cotton offers the best price-to-quality ratio for mass use. It is ideal for basics and frequently replaced garments. Investment in comfort. The higher price reflects complex, eco-friendly production and premium quality. It’s for those who value “less but better” and long-term comfort.

     Our opinion: theory vs. practice

While technical properties and comparisons help understand the differences, the real answer often lies not in numbers, but in the first touch. Cotton will always remain a safe and reliable choice, but modal is the experience that changes your perception of how soft a fabric can truly be.

We believe that choosing between classic and innovation is deeply personal. Some prefer the structure and simplicity of cotton, while others cannot imagine life without the cool, silky feel of modal.
